CIRCLE
Favignana's hospitality and constant conversation with tuff created a breaking point in my research focused on the shape of the circle in relation to the other, environment or people.
This installation came about as a result of my ongoing research on the circle and its form. The circle is perfection, the circle has no beginning and no end, no orientations or directions. The circle represents harmony, time, the eternal, balance, archetype and magic. It represents the sun, the moon, the planets, the cosmos. The iconography of the circle, and the circular movement, have an infinity of universal meanings and references. The attempt of this new installation is to try to “explode” its closed form-first childish design as a sign of individual unity-invading the surrounding space.
Cerchio is an 'installation composed of 34 individual pieces made of tuff stone iconic and of great value to the island of Favignana. The individual pieces are arranged in such a way that they do not recall the shape of the circle but at the same time were generated by “breaking” into several parts of the circle, in fact the combination of these would reconstruct an original circle . Here they are instead arranged in a way that conforms a circle.
I worked on this project intuitively, at the same time governed by a precise mental “design,” which I tried to translate through harmonic coordinates. The challenge of using such a fragile material to study the circle led me to de-construct its very form, becoming a metaphor for our fragility as human beings.
